A good fit

How is it that the same picture can inspire one and revolt another? I saw a Lee Friedlander exhibit this year and I did not get it at all. I absolutely was not revolted, but I just wasn’t moved. I ended up internalizing my dissatisfaction with the pictures as ‘well, you just don’t know enough about art..” Well, that is true. But you still like what you like and that’s it.

I keep going back to that Rachel Papo lady who did the Israeli soldier collection. I don’t know how I missed this before, but her Desperately Perfect project about hopeful students at a Russian ballet academy is pretty cool.

Vote Now! Please.

Pretty please. This picture of Briones & my grandma is in the running at National Geographic’s Daily Dozen. The highest voted picture of the month will be published in the magazine. I get chills just thinking about it AND there are some really stellar shots that deserve to be there. But maybe..just maybe…HELP!

Okay. Go straightaway to the Your Shot Voting Machine which should be on August WEEK 4. Start voting (you have to start voting on whatever photo is at the beginning in order to get to mine). Use the scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 being the highest rating). Voting ends soon — September 4th.

I have to go pray to the Photo Gods now.

This here is my handsome husband if you didn’t already know that. I like this picture because it says things that I think he is : his soft gentle eyes, his approachable smile, his confident connect.

Paul.

I found a photo collection that totally speaks to me as well. Pretty girls with guns. Becoming women. You must check it out. It’s Rachel Papo’s Serial No. 3817131

Thinking of all things beautiful today.

*A beautiful and long awaited day for a special friend, who has worked so hard and is amazing & beautiful & always inspiring.

*Watching Briones ‘cook’ breakfast in the morning. And then eating it.

*Noticing the light in Briones’ eyes while I explain that ‘art’ should have no rules whatsoever, and then watching her proceed to cut turquoise tulle fabric to make a pair of shorts…for the cat.

*Finding random blog posts like this one and this one, that for no particular reason make me feel happy.

Tate Modern

San Francisco

Pinch me now! I am dreaming. Okay, that hurt. I am in disbelief right now. A San Francisco photo I took earlier this spring was chosen in a contest by Tate Modern in London. Besides never ever winning anything, I am so excited that my little photo will enjoy some time overseas (lord knows, someone ought to!).

In conjunction with the exhibition Street & Studio: A History of Urban Photography, Tate Modern invites you to contribute your own urban portraits to be shown in the gallery, and to have the chance to be part of the Street or Studio user-generated photobook.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Street & Studio: A History of Urban Photography at (Tate Modern 22 May – 31 August 2008) presents a history of photographic portraiture: taken on the street or in the photographer’s studio.

It contrasts carefully orchestrated studio shots with images captured in the changing and uncontrollable street, highlighting the crossovers between the genres and their influence on each other.
